PERESTROIKA at Al-Ándalus school

Explaining some historical facts at school is always better if we have the chance to count on some eyewitnesses who lived that part of contemporary History and can explain what the lived at that precise moment and place. This is the case of the activity organised by the Department of History of IES Al-Ándalus for the subject called History of the Contemporary World, studied in Bachiller 1.

One of the topics in the curriculum is Perestroika in the former Soviet Union. The so called Perestroika was a political movement for reformation within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union during the 1980s until 1991 associated with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and his glasnot (“openness”) policy reform, or practice of more open consultative government and wider dissemination of information. It was first proposed by Leonid Brezhnev in 1979 and actively promoted by Mihail Gorbachev. It originally referred to increased automation, labour efficiency and restructuring but eventually it entailed greater awareness of economic markets and the ending of central government planning.

At that time, Nora and Alex, Irish citizens of Russian origin, were living in Russia. They had been born there and lived there until they left. They witnessed every day’s life in their country and were able to get a first-hand look at the real situation. Years later, they have been so kind as to come to our school and tell our students about what they saw, experienced and felt there at that very moment of contemporary History.

The talk was called “Perestroika: first-hand impression” and took place at our school on May 7th. The two Bachiller 1 groups attended the lectura. Nora gave her part of the talk in Spanish and Alex spoke in English.

Thanks Nora and Alex.

Gracias Nora, gracias Alex.
